Movies to be release this year
RoboCop (2014)
Action | Crime | Sci-Fi | Thriller
In 2028 Detroit, when Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) - a loving husband, father and good cop - is critically injured in the line of duty, the multinational conglomerate OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer.
Director:José Padilha
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: For his English-language debut, Elite Squad director Jose Padilha has the dubious honor of handling this long-in-development remake that had trouble holding onto its stars before filming began. Even with this enviable cast, in the post-Total Recall, post-Dredd era, the studio and most everyone involved with this project must be a bit nervous
Seventh Son (2013)
Adventure | Family | Fantasy
A 18th century adventure story centered on young Thomas, who is apprenticed to the local Spook to learn to fight evil spirits. His first great challenge comes when the powerful Mother Malkin escapes her confinement while the Spook is away.
Director:Sergey Bodrov
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Love the idea of what evil in the form of Julianne Moore and directed by Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan's Sergey Bodrov will look like; further stoking our interest is the fact that the project is on the Warner Bros. lot, as the studio is eager to appease its Harry Potterfanbase. Hopefully Bodrov and the studio found a balance between storytelling, practical filmmaking, and visual effects. They've certainly put together quite a cast.
I, Frankenstein (2014)
Action | Fantasy | Sci-Fi
Frankenstein's creature finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans.
Director:Stuart Beattie
THE BUZZ: This sounds like classic Universal horror meets the Underworld franchise for a reason: the source material is a graphic novel created by Kevin Grevioux, who co-wrote the story that introduced us to the vampire warrior, Selene. Aaron Eckhart plays Dr. Frankenstein's creation, who has survived into modern times due to a genetic anomaly, but I am more excited by the notion of Bill Nighy playing a demon-army leader.
Lone Survivor (2013)
Action | Drama | Thriller | War
Based on the failed June 28, 2005 mission "Operation Red Wings". Four members of SEAL Team 10 were tasked with the mission to capture or kill notorious Taliban leader Ahmad Shahd. Marcus Luttrell was the only member of his team to survive.
Director:Peter Berg | |
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: One of two Oscar hopefuls for Universal Pictures (the other being Rush) Peter Berg's contemporary wartime picture is apparently one tough sit, with a small team of Navy SEALS ultimately facing down 200-strong Al Qaeda soldiers. Audiences definitely accept Mark Wahlberg in serious-action mode, and this platform release should find momentum throughout the month of January
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
Adventure | Fantasy
The Dwarves, Bilbo and Gandalf have successfully escaped the Misty Mountains, and Bilbo has gained the One Ring. They all continue their journey to get their gold back from the Dragon, Smaug.
Director:Peter Jackson
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: The best ways in which to sum up my enthusiasm for the second installment of Peter Jackson's prequel trilogy are: I can't wait for Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of Smaug ... and ... and ... and I'll be one step closer to taking in the brutal splendor of the Battle of Fives Armies in The Hobbit: There and Back Again
Out of the Furnace (2013)
- Drama | Thriller
When Rodney Baze mysteriously disappears and law enforcement fails to follow through, his older brother, Russell, takes matters into his own hands to find justice.
Director:Scott Cooper
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: It's a good time to be Scott Cooper. The Crazy Heart filmmaker seems to have a career in front of him that'll enable him to write and direct his own projects at his own speed, and attract top-tier actors whose choices always range from blockbusters to artier fare. Such a seemingly dark thriller as Furnace will always attract media/online attention, though we're curious to see how this one translates in terms of box-office performance
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013)
- Biography | Drama | History
A chronicle of Nelson Mandela's life journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.
Director:Justin Chadwick
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Could be a major year for Idris Elba if Pacific Rim emerges as a global hit and his portrayal as Nelson Mandela in the decade-in-the-making film version of his autobiography. Freedom for Nelson. Democracy for South Africa. Oscars for Idris and Naomie.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)
Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi | Thriller
Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.
Director:Francis Lawrence
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: The Hunger Games was the most satisfying franchise-starter in some time; a true measure of its success were the positive reactions from people who had yet to read the novels before seeing the movie. We love that the sequel was filmed in Hawaii, an ideal setting for the beautiful harshness of the Quarter Quell. Cast and crew wise, we're less concerned about any choices made by director Francis Lawrence and more worried about Sam Claflin as the knot-tying/Katniss-wooing Finnick Odair, because he displayed an innate talent for making time stand still in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Snow White and the Huntsman.
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Action | Adventure | Fantasy
Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.
Director:Alan Taylor | |
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: I feel like Thor is the best Marvel achievement to date in that it (a) celebrated its underdog status; (b) found a smart balance between its humor and emotion; and (c) featured the delicious Idris Elba. And I mean Loki is one of the best big-screen villains in popcorn-movie history. So knowing that the sequel reunites the original cast (including Tom Hiddleston), introduces Christopher Eccleston as Malekith the Accursed (a dark-elf overlord that has an entwined history with Loki), and places Alan Taylor from "Game of Thrones" in the director's chair, it has all the makings of the first winning Marvel sequel (no apologies to Iron Man 2)
Bad Grandpa (2013)
Comedy
86-year-old Irving Zisman is on a journey across America with the most unlikely companion: his 8 year-old grandson, Billy.
Director:Jeff Tremaine
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Johnny Knoxville is pretty much the only person who can get away with what essentially amounts to a big-screen tribute to Sacha Baron Cohen.
All Is Lost (2013)
- Action | Drama
After a collision with a shipping container at sea, a resourceful sailor finds himself, despite all efforts to the contrary, staring his mortality in the face.
Director:J.C. ChandorStars:Robert Redford
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: From the sound of the reviews coming out of Cannes, what might be lost is J.C. Chandor's momentum after Margin Call proved to be a theatrical success and VOD phenomenon. Seems Chandor and Robert Redford were going for a meditative thriller but might have wound up with something a little more on the aggravating/disappointing side. Still, we don't rule out a re-edit and more welcoming acceptance when the film hits theaters
12 Years a Slave (2013)
- Biography | Drama | History
In the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.
Director:Steve McQueen
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: While it won't be an easy watch, Chiwetel Ejiofor finally gets a leading role in a project that should artfully exhibit his range as an actor. Steve McQueen reunites with Fox Searchlight, who distributed his last work, Shame, for another brave outing from the writer/director. We're interested to see how McQueen works on a larger scale given the depth of this cast and the period setting.
The Fifth Estate (2013)
- Biography | Drama
A dramatic thriller based on real events, THE FIFTH ESTATE reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century's most fiercely debated organization.
Director:Bill Condon | |
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: The first Internet-maverick profile since The Social Network might create a firestorm stronger than the controversy Zero Dark Thirty used as its marketing campaign. Julian Assange himself denounced an early version of the script, saying its structure was built on a series of lies - though it's hard to know which screenplay he saw, as DreamWorks used to different books as the basis of the filmed story. Don't expect his voice to be silent at any stage unless he wants it to be. In lighter news, director Bill Condon might find himself back in Oscar contention for the first time since his Chicago screenplay, and we will take our Benedict Cumberbatch starring roles in any form
Captain Phillips (2013)
- Action | Biography | Drama | Thriller
The true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.
Director:Paul Greengrass
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Tom Hanks in heroic non-fiction mode could be the kind of audience-and-awards-baiting drama that causes millions of people to remember how effective he can be as a leading man. Playing the Sandra Bullock Role here is Catherine Kenner
Gravity (2013)
- Drama | Mystery | Sci-Fi | Thriller
A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space.
Director:Alfonso Cuarón
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: A who's who of actresses were attached or considered for this leading role. Angelina Jolie was set to star -- on two separate occasions -- and then it was Natalie Portman's next big project in the post-Black Swan/pre-pregnancy days. Ultimately, it will serve as Sandra Bullock's first science fiction role, and her fanbase should swell even more under the direction of treasured director Alfonso Cuarón, who somehow hasn't directed a project since the absolutely perfect Children of Men. It's been widely noted that Clooney's screen time will be minimal, but pivotal (clearly)
We Are What We Are (2013) - [Limited]
- Drama | Horror | Thriller
The Parkers, a reclusive family who follow ancient customs, find their secret existence threatened as a torrential downpour moves into their area, forcing daughters Iris and Rose to assume responsibilities beyond those of a typical family.
Director:Jim Mickle | |
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Director Jim Mickle and writer/actor Nick Damici established themselves in the world of indie horror with 2006's Mulberry Street, and here they take on the English-language revamp of the 2010 Mexican film that got a lot of attention of the film-festival circuit and was eventually released by IFC. With the original movie's cache and the redo's strong cast (including a supporting appearance by Kelly McGillis, who was also seen in Mickle's recentStake Land), many a critical eye awaited this project -- and this was an informed audience, unlike the critics and bloggers who were caught off-guard by the original. It's a feat in and of itself that Mickle has critics divided as to which version is better.
Rush (2013)
- Action | Biography | Drama | Sport
A re-creation of the merciless 1970s rivalry between Formula One rivals James Hunt and Niki Lauda.
Director:Ron Howard | |
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Senna made the real world of Formula 1 racing one of the best documentaries in recent history. Will a dramatized version of champion rider Niki Lauda's obsessive competitive streak register with a wide audience? Well, with Ron Howard directing, we can't help but think this will be the safest race around. The upshot: Daniel Brühl's first starring role in the States.
January 11
Gangster Squad (2013)
- Action | Crime | Drama
A chronicle of the LAPD's fight to keep East Coast Mafia types out of Los Angeles in the 1940s and 50s.
Director:Ruben Fleischer
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: For his new movie, Ruben Fleischer makes a wise directorial move away from action comedies and goes back to the mid-century for a hard-boiled crime drama with a fine ensemble cast. You might remember the squad was re-booked from an awards-friendly 2012 release to this month after the awful events of Aurora, Colorado; Fleischer cut certain footage and re-shot some scenes in order to soften the film's violence. Despite the high-profile cast, you might say the person getting the most attention at the moment is screenwriter Will Beallsince he is developing the Justice League script for Warner Bros.
A Haunted House (2013)
Comedy
Malcolm and Keisha move into their dream home, but soon learn a demon also resides there. When Kisha becomes possessed, Malcolm - determined to keep his sex life on track - turns to a priest, a psychic, and a team of ghost-busters for help.
Director:Michael Tiddes
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Marlon Wayans presents his Paranormal Activity spoof months before Scary Movie 5-- the franchise Wayans helped launch -- tests its cultural relevancy. Scary will have more marketing power, but we bet Haunted will bring the funny.
Quartet (2012)
- Comedy | Drama
At a home for retired opera singers, the annual concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday is disrupted by the arrival of Jean, an eternal diva and the former wife of one of the residents.
Director:Dustin Hoffman
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: As the third season of "Downton Abbey" is released in the U.S., no doubt older audiences will indulge in Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut, which places Maggie Smith front and center as the grande dame who shakes up the populace of a home for quippy octogenarians. Reviews have been polite, as you might expect, but little more.
Struck by Lightning (2012)
- Comedy | Drama
After being struck and killed by lightning, a young man recounts the way he blackmailed his fellow classmates into contributing to his literary magazine.
Director:Brian Dannelly
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Unlike most of his "Glee" schoolmates, Chris Colfer might put the New Directions era behind him and wade into the world of filmmaking; his screenplay has earned favorable comparisons to everyone's favorite high school comedies, and there's the built-in cool factor knowing that his character narrates the story from the grave. That's totally Winona-approved.
$ellebrity (2012)
- Documentary
Celebrity photographer Kevin Mazur gives an all access pass to life behind the velvet rope and in front of the camera.
Director:Kevin Mazur | |
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Some of the chiefs behind this documentary on the rise of paparazzi culture have graciously contributed the photos for our event coverage over the years, and we wish them the best with the roll out of their new work.
Storage 24 (2012)
- Horror | Sci-Fi
In London, a military plane crashes leaving its highly classified contents strewn across the city. Completely unaware that the city is in lockdown, a group of people become trapped inside a storage facility with a highly unwelcome guest.
Director:Johannes Roberts
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Noel Clarke grinds out a handful of microbudget films a year in the UK, though in the US he's more the kind of performer who causes people to use this site to answer the question: What movie was he in? Magnolia Pictures follows their now-standard procedure of releasing the movie on VOD a month or so before its theatrical run, which is proving to be a savvy business model for the indie studio. In terms of the film itself, the premise is so ingenious we're surprised no one has thought of it before.
Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
- Action | Drama | History | Thriller
A chronicle of the decade-long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden after the September 2001 attacks, and his death at the hands of the Navy S.E.A.L. Team 6 in May, 2011.
Director:Kathryn Bigelow
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Kathryn Bigelow's never known the level of controversy her follow-up to The Hurt Locker has generated. Even before cameras rolled on the recreation of the events leading up to the assassination of Osama bin Laden, a government watchdog group has filed a lawsuit against the CIA and the Department of Defense since details of the reported meeting between the agencies, Bigelow, and writer Mark Boal have not been released via the Freedom of Information Act. Seems like the filmmakers have been privy to classified information. And that situation is old news when compared to the early critical reactions, which range from laudatory to damning. It's the sort of real-world drama the industry and those who write about it could mutually benefit from, a reminder of when American films used to resonate beyond our desire for entertainment.
January 18
Mama (2013)
- Horror
Annabel and Lucas are faced with the challenge of raising his young nieces that were left alone in the forest for 5 years.... but how alone were they?
Director:Andrés Muschietti
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Looks like Guillermo del Toro is in proud-papa mode as he mentors filmmaker Andres Muschietti, who here adapts his short into what could be one of the most effective spins on the admittedly tired haunted-kid horror story. And we totally love Jessica Chastain's Dragon Tattoo makeover.
The Last Stand (2013)
- Action | Crime | Thriller
The leader of a drug cartel busts out of a courthouse and speeds to the Mexican border, where the only thing in his path is a sheriff and his inexperienced staff.
Director:Jee-woon Kim
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: This thriller, which has earned comparisons to High Noon (seriously), was almost made with Liam Neeson back when Taken made him to the go-to man for action-movie pitches. If the screenplay is as good as its Black List-status, and if I Saw the Devil director Kim Jee-Woon finds a balance between characterization and style, Sheriff Ray Owens might become another iconic Arnold Schwarzenegger hero.
Broken City (2013)
- Crime | Drama | Thriller
An ex-cop trailing the wife of New York City's mayor finds himself immersed in a larger scandal.
Director:Allen Hughes
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: From Menace II Society through The Book of Eli, Allen and Albert Hughes always worked in tandem as directors and producers, but Allen has gone solo for this presumably hard-boiled genre film written by Brian Tucker, who has no produced screenplays to his credit but has two projects in development -- a remake of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Basic Instinct soundalike called The Arrangement. Looking at Mark Wahlberg's upcoming movies, this one almost gets lost in the shuffle; for Russell Crowe, it's a pivotal role between a potential Oscar nomination for Les Misérables and his take on the character Jor-El in the Superman reboot Man of Steel.
LUV (2012)
- Drama
11-year-old Woody has to decide whether to follow in his hero's steps or become his own man as he spends the day with his recently paroled uncle, whose attempt to right his life hits an unexpected snag.
Director:Sheldon Candis
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Common is more of a brand than an actor or rapper these days, but we have heard good things about his co-star, Michael Rainey Jr., in his debut role. Rainey Jr. will next appear as the younger version of Forest Whitaker's title character in The Butler.
January 25
Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters (2013)
Action | Fantasy | Horror
In this dark spin on the fairy tale, siblings Hansel and Gretel are a formidable team of bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world.
Director:Tommy Wirkola
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: For a minute there, we wondered if this one would ever get off the ground; to put it in perspective, development on writer-director Tommy Wirkola's follow up to Dead Snow has been in effect since David Fincher was circling Black Hole as his post-Benjamin Button option. Fast forward through all the actresses who've come and gone as Gretel (Diane Kruger, Eva Green, Noomi Rapace) and now we're just nervous that the movie's horror-comedy angle might prevent it from being a crossover hit.
Parker (2013)
- Crime | Thriller
A thief with a unique code of professional ethics is double-crossed by his crew and left for dead. Assuming a new disguise and forming an unlikely alliance with a woman on the inside, he looks to hijack the score of the crew's latest heist.
Director:Taylor Hackford
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Are you...losing...interest...in....Statham, too? This time, there's Jennifer Lopez by his side and a Robin Hood theme running through the narrative, sorta. I'm amazed this is not a CBS Films release.
Movie 43 (2013)
Comedy
An ensemble comedy intertwining different tales.
Directors:Elizabeth Banks | Steven Brill | Steve Carr | Rusty Cundieff |James Duffy | Griffin Dunne | Peter Farrelly | Patrik Forsberg | James Gunn| Bob Odenkirk | Brett Ratner | Jonathan van Tulleken
THE BUZZ: This is like the director's version of New Year's Eve, I guess. Sounds great in theory, and a potentially wasted opportunity to think beyond the big screen in terms of how to distribute such a project. In other words: a YouTube event? Huge traffic with lots of Likes and all the things that matter in the digital age. As a traditional release? Even I might wait to stream it.
John Dies at the End (2012)
- Comedy | Fantasy | Horror
A new street drug that sends its users across time and dimensions has one drawback: some people return as no longer human. Can two college dropouts save humankind from this silent, otherworldly invasion?
Director:Don Coscarelli
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Don Coscarelli's legion of fans probably know already that Angus Scrimm, the haunting grave-robber from Coscarelli's seminal Phantasm saga, appears in the director's first film in a decade. Armed with a bugged-out premise, Paul Giamatti, and the ever-increasing preference for video on demand, perhaps other innovative and hard-to-define from the Coscarelli Era will resurrect their careers as well.
February 1
Warm Bodies (2013)
- Comedy | Horror | Romance
After a zombie becomes involved with the girlfriend of one of his victims, their romance sets in motion a sequence of events that might transform the entire lifeless world.
Director:Jonathan Levine
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Better than The Wackness or even 50/50 is director Jonathan Levine's first film, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, so I'm happy to see him returning to the horror genre for what could be the next undead date movie -- the sub-genre introduced by Zombieland.
Sound City (2013)
Documentary
A documentary on the fabled recording studio that was located in Van Nuys, California.
Director:David Grohl | |
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: We pine along with Dave Grohl for the days when bands were comprised of musicians whose instruments were recorded onto tape, instead of all the digital wizardry that makes contemporary rock and pop sound so homogenous. But will the ultimately irony here be a major digital-release push?
February 8
Identity Thief (2013)
Comedy | Crime
When a mild-mannered businessman learns his identity has been stolen, he hits the road in an attempt to foil the thief -- a trip that puts him in the path of a deceptively harmless-looking woman.
Director:Seth Gordon | |
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: The industry was in a frenzy, trying to shape a project for Melissa McCarthy after her breakout performance in Bridesmaids. Similar to Kristen Wiig, she measured her big-screen options while enjoying elevated ratings for her TV show "Mike & Molly". But consider us a bit underwhelmed by the thought of her matching wits with Jason Bateman in his reunion with director Seth Gordon; their career comedy Horrible Bosses was hard-R formula at its most basic, and I fear we're in for another raunchy outing that doesn't play to McCarthy's true genius.
Side Effects (2013)
Crime | Drama | Thriller
A woman turns to prescription medication as a way of handling her anxiety concerning her husband's upcoming release from prison.
Director:Steven Soderbergh
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Originally pitched as a "thriller set in the world of pharmacology," the updated premise sounds a bit like an edgy Nicholas Sparks novel written expressly for Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum. But really it's Tatum's third film with Steven Soderbergh - and quite possibly the director's last feature before exploring his TV options. Soderbergh's remarks on trying to make narratively rich box-office hits makes me feel he could have 1) bailed from studio moviemaking after Haywire; 2) taught a summer session at a deserving film school; and 3) pitched AMC for an early 2013 program.
February 15
A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)
Action | Crime | Thriller
John McClane travels to Russia to help out his seemingly wayward son, Jack, only to discover that Jack is a CIA operative working to prevent a nuclear-weapons heist, causing the father and son to team up against underworld forces.
Director:John Moore | |
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: If the Patrick Stewart casting rumors turn out to be true, John McClane's fifth outing might have a villain as iconic as Hans Gruber. Talk about a franchise we still love but would benefit from some vitality; as happy as we are to Jai Courtney in the role of McClane's son, the Die Hard saga needs more than youth to truly revitalize our interest. As The Expendables and Red have proved, aging action heroes can be more than just a box-office draw; they can be pop-cultural events, too.
Beautiful Creatures (2013)
Drama
Ethan longs to escape his small Southern town. He meets a mysterious new girl, Lena. Together, they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town.
Director:Richard LaGravenese
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Warner Brothers might not ever replicate the success of the Harry Potter franchise, but this four-book series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl has potential to thrill die-hard fans of Ethan Wate and Lena Duchannes while introducing newbies to the secrets of Gatlin County. I like how the studio has followed the Potter model of getting adult-oriented filmmakers to handle youth-skewing source material; in this case, screenplay doctor and sometime director Richard LaGravenese might find his greatest success to date. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to seeing more Jack O'Connell, yet another cast member from the defunt program Skins who is getting a Hollywood shot. Playing the mysterious Lena is Alice Englert in her first major role.
Safe Haven (2013)
Romance
A young woman with a mysterious past lands in Southport, North Carolina where her bond with a widower forces her to confront the dark secret that haunts her.
Director:Lasse Hallström
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Lasse Hallström appears to have found safe haven translating the work of Nicholas Sparks into hit movies, and if this project does indeed land Keira Knightley, the actress should kick off 2013 with a box-office success after two previous artier endeavors,Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and Anna Karenina. Let's see, though, how audiences react to themes of domestic abuse, and I'm curious who will be cast to play the man from protagonist Katie's past.
Escape from Planet Earth (2013)
Animation | Adventure | Comedy | Family | Sci-Fi
Astronaut Scorch Supernova finds himself caught in a trap when he responds to an SOS from a notoriously dangerous alien planet.
Director:Cal Brunker | |
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: The Weinstein Company is an Oscar-winning powerhouse, for sure, but they haven't fared well in the lucrative world of animated movies. The studio has turned to one of the production companies behind Hoodwinked! for their space adventure, which admittedly looks cool with its big, blue-headed astronauts. But the keys to success with kid movies are marketing and advertising, the kinds of expenditures Harvey & co. specialize in when there are awards to be won.
A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III (2012)
Comedy
A graphic designer's enviable life slides into despair when his girlfriend breaks up with him.
Director:Roman Coppola
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: The first trailer didn't quite stoke my enthusiasm for Roman Coppola's follow-up to the visual achievement that was CQ, but I have faith that his new work is much more than a costume party starring Charlie Sheen. And if I'm wrong, I will finally side with a close friend who asserts that there is no space in the current art world for musings of the Coppola Aristocracy.
February 22
Snitch (2013)
Action | Drama | Thriller
A father goes undercover for the DEA in order to free his son who was imprisoned after being set up in drug deal.
Director:Ric Roman Waugh
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: Stuntman-turned-filmmaker Ric Roman Waugh takes the reins for Dwayne Johnson's second attempt to come across like an everyman (see: Walking Tall). What's most encouraging is the supporting cast, which is populated by three guys from some of the butchest cable TV programs in recent times: Jon Bernthal ("Walking Dead"), Harold Perrineau ("Oz"), and Michael Kenneth Williams ("The Wire"). We have to wonder if this movie would have been even better as a mini-series?
Dark Skies (2013)
Horror | Sci-Fi | Thriller
As the Barret family's peaceful suburban life is rocked by an escalating series of disturbing events, they come to learn that a terrifying and deadly force is after them.
Director:Scott Charles Stewart
Watch Trailer |
THE BUZZ: What currently reads like an "American Horror Story: Asylum" sub-plot gets stretched into a feature from director Scott Charles Stewart, who will hopefully ease off the visual-effects indulgences that turned his first two movies -- Legion and Priest -- into unintended spectacles. The first trailer was refreshingly old school.

Stoker (2013)
-
Drama
|
Horror
|
Mystery
|
Thriller
After India's father dies, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew
existed, comes to live with her and her unstable mother. She comes to
suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives and becomes
increasingly infatuated with him.
Director:Chan-wook Park |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: I can't really describe my anticipation for the English-language debut from Chan-wook Park, director of Thirst and the Lady Vengeance trilogy most popularly represented by its second installment, Oldboy. Though he isn't directing from his own screenplay -- those duties were left to Wentworth Miller, who was guided by the dark-hued hand of Erin Cressida Wilson
-- Park has narrative and stylistic flourishes that are a custom fit
for Nicole Kidman's art-house leanings. Meanwhile, Mia Wasikowska
continues to out-Fanning her peers with a series of wonderfully offbeat
moves.
21 and Over (2013)
Comedy
The night before his big medical school exam, a promising student
celebrates his 21st birthday with his two best friends.
|
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Considering the
presence of screenwriters-turned-directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore,
and the fact that this movie was partially shot in China, I'm sensing we
might be in store for a Hangover II-level misadventure for the Project X
crowd. What doesn't make me cringe is knowing that Relativity Media,
the studio behind the project, tends to make likeable if underrated
youth comedies, including the recent Take Me Home Tonight. Also, star Miles Teller has successfully avoided our scorn by surviving both Footloose and the aforementioned PX with his charm intact.
The Last Exorcism Part II (2013)
Horror
|
Thriller
As Nell Sweetzer tries to build a new life after the events of the first
movie, the evil force that once possessed her returns with an even more
horrific plan.
Director:Ed Gass-Donnelly |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Most interesting to
us is the studio switch that finds the sequel to the surprise horror hit
being released by CBS Films instead of Lionsgate. Back in 2010, the
genre specialists relentlessly marketed the original for an $20 million
opening weekend. Looks like CBS Films is determined to stick around and
has begun to shell out for proven box-office hits (remember how The Woman in Black
performed for them). Eli Roth is back in producer mode and probably
knows more than anyone that this really is nowhere near the the last
exorcism for poor Nell Sweetzer. Indie director Ed Gass-Donnelly (Small Town Murder Songs) gets the call up to the semi-big leagues.
Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)
Adventure
|
Drama
|
Fantasy
|
Romance
A modern day fairy tale in which the long-standing peace between men and
giants is threatened, as a young farmer leads an expedition into the
giants' kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess.
Director:Bryan Singer |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Bryan Singer earned major cred for overseeing X-Men: First Class
while
keeping his commitment to Jack, his passion project. Nicolas Hoult held
his own amongst First Class's starry cast, so I'm excited to see how he
fares with his first leading Hollywood role. Of course, any first
indication of what this fairy tale will look like is eagerly
anticipated.

Fantasy
A Kansas con-artist is swept into a magical land where he must fight an evil sorceress.
Director:Sam Raimi |

The Buzz: If you accept the
notion that most of Sam Raimi's movies have been dark fairy tales, then
perhaps James Franco will find more mainstream success as the star of a
second, formerly objectionable prequel. Speaking of dark fairy tales,
have you had enough of the trend or do you want more?

The Buzz: Find me a more intriguing director/star reunion than Dragon Tattoo's
Niels Arden Oplev and Noomi Rapace and I'll acknowledge that the second
and third installments of that trilogy were clunkers. Point to a
stranger/more exciting cast than Rapace, Colin Farrell, Dominic Cooper,
Terrence Howard, Isabelle Huppert, and Armand Assante (?!) and, okay,
okay, I'll admit that this premise sounds like a series of potential
cliches.

The Buzz: Such a take on the
horror genre seems destined to become an at-home staple for the hardcore
fans of the genre; as casual-interest viewers, we're just excited to
see studios taking a chance with their theatrical releases.
